What about the Snake Shirt?

Celebrating the "year of the snake” We took inspiration from the retro snake game in the style of 8 bit art. Modern day emoticons and digital art are infact originally inspired or learnt from embroidery techniques such as these that followed a process of counting yarns on fabric, and building a motif using small embroidered squares and triangles. We used an extremely rare embroidery called “Soof” to illustrate our concept.

The area is characterized by a rural landscape, with vast stretches of desert and semi-arid terrain, interspersed with patches of greenery and
water bodies. The village is surrounded by the unique salt marshes of the Rann of Kutch, which are especially beautiful during the Rann Utsav
when the vast white desert is illuminated under the moonlight.

We travelled to a small village called Sumrasar for the "snake shirt". The area is characterized by a rural landscape, with vast stretches of desert and semi-arid terrain, interspersed with patches of greenery and water bodies. The village is surrounded by the unique salt marshes of the Rann of Kutch, The region also has a rich wildlife habitat, where migratory birds like storks can be seen in nearby areas, making it an ideal destination for birdwatchers.

Soof embroidery is a traditional hand-embroidery style practiced in this region of Gujarat, India, by the Sindhi community. Known for its vibrant, geometric designs and intricate stitching, Soof embroidery often incorporates mirror work and bright, bold colors like reds, greens, and blues.
